What Is TOEFL?

If you are unfamiliar, TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is one of the most widely-administered and widely-accepted tests by colleges, universities, and employers. It can also be helpful for those seeking certain types of visas. with 10,000 institutions in over 150 countries recognizing the test, it has helped countless people to achieve their dreams in English-speaking nations and organizations.

The test can be taken as many times as a person chooses. However, it cannot be taken more than once in any given twelve-day period. It is administered at registered test-taking centers throughout the world at least 50 times per year. Each score is good for up to two years after the exam was taken.

You cannot register for the TOEFL on the day in which you wish to take the test. Registration must be completed in advance. General registration for an exam closes seven days before the scheduled date of the test. However, late registration can occur as close as four days until the test date. Late registration is subject to an additional fee.

Registration can generally be done online, with accommodations available for those with special needs. You can also complete registration over the phone or by mail if you so choose.

Test-Taking Fees

The overall fees related to test registration vary by country and location. However, this fee includes the ability for you to send your score report to up to four different institutions. If you would like to order additional score reports, that can be done once you receive your score for an additional fee per score report.

There is also a fee for rescheduling your exam, so be sure to carefully consult your calendar before committing to a specific date and time. Luckily, many different forms of payment are accepted including credit and debit cards, electronic checks, and PayPal. Unfortunately, cash is not accepted as a form of payment.

If you are a high school student in the United States experiencing financial hardship and you wish to use the TOEFL to apply for colleges and universities, then there is a fee reduction program that you can request. This service allows these students to have half the cost of the exam covered for them.

What You Need on Test Day

It is advised that test takers bring two forms of ID with them to the testing center on the day of their exam. These forms of ID must be original: photocopies will not be accepted in most cases. The documents cannot be expired, and the name displayed on them must exactly match the name that was used to register for the exam. The identification also needs to display a photograph that can be clearly identifiable as the test taker along with their signature.

It is extremely important that you have proper identification before registering for the TOEFL. Otherwise, if you are refused from the testing center, your registration fee will not be refunded. If you need to leave to obtain acceptable documentation, the center is not required to hold your seat for you.

Leave all other personal belongings at home or in your car. Anything brought into the testing center is subject to search and/or confiscation. You do not need to bring headphones as they will be provided for you. Once the test begins, you will not be allowed access to any electronic devices.

Make sure that you arrive at least thirty minutes prior to when your test is scheduled to begin. If you arrive late, you will not be admitted, and your registration fee will not be refunded.

What Is TOEFL iBT?

There used to be two main types of the exam: the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL PBT. The primary difference between the two was that the iBT was administered through the use of computers and the internet. The PBT was delivered via paper. The PBT has been largely phased out and replaced with a revised paper-delivered test called TOEFL ITP that was launched in October of 2017.

TOEFL Exam Format and Time

When taking the TOEFL iBT, exam takers will complete sections in reading, writing, speaking, listening. Those taking the paper-delivered test will only take part in reading, writing, and listening because of the difficulties in recording speech for a paper test. When at all possible, those who wish to take this exam should consider the iBT because it is a more comprehensive test.

The iBT test can take anywhere from three hours and ten minutes to four hours and twenty minutes. The paper-based exam generally takes two hours and thirty minutes.

The first two sections of the TOEFL iBT are reading and listening. These each take between one hour and ninety minutes. The reading section can have anywhere from 36 to 56 questions based on several different reading passages. The listening section is comprised of 34 to 51 questions relating to lectures, classroom discussions, or conversations. It is important to note that during the listening section you may hear speakers with a variety of English dialects including but not limited to American, British, or Australian.

Following a ten-minute break, you will return for the final two sections: speaking and writing. There will be six tasks in the speaking portion lasting twenty minutes. Finally, you will be given 50 minutes for the writing category, in which you must complete two tasks.

Occasionally, the test makers include extra questions in any given section that do not count toward your score. The purpose of these additional questions can be either to test new questions or to make the scores comparable to other situations.

In summary, the exam format and test time are:

• Part 1) Reading: 36 – 56 questions; Time: approx. 1 hr, 90 minutes
• Part 1) Listening: 34 – 51 questions; Time: approx. 1 hr, 90 minutes
• Break) Ten minutes
• Part 2) Speaking: 6 tasks; Time: 20 minutes
• Part 2) Writing: 2 tasks; Time: 50 minutes

You are allowed to take notes on provided scratch paper throughout the entirety of the exam. These notes will be destroyed upon the test’s completion. Because of the duration of the exam, test takers need to build up some stamina and mental toughness before diving right into these challenging exams.

TOEFL iBT Preparation

If you are planning to take the TOEFL test online, then you should look into preparation specifically for the TOEFL internet-based test. Luckily, there are plenty of TOEFL preparation courses that you can tailor specifically to your needs.

How to study for the TOEFL iBT exam does not need to be complicated. However, it must be similar to the conditions you will experience during the actual exam. Since this test is online, it is imperative that you conduct TOEFL iBT practice online as well.

If you are not used to spending long periods of time in front of a computer screen, then the exam may come as a bit of a shock to you. However, with a bit of TOEFL training, you will be poised and ready to go. Additionally, it is highly recommended that you spend a significant amount of time using a QWERTY keyboard because this is what is generally used. If you are a below-average typist on this type of keyboard, then it could negatively impact your score.

TOEFL Exam Preparation Time

One of the most important things to keep in mind when preparing for the TOEFL test is that you cannot just cram the night before. Even if you are extremely confident in your English-speaking abilities, you need to learn TOEFL iBT reading strategies and experience TOEFL iBT writing questions to truly be ready.

Consider developing a one-month TOEFL study schedule. This can help you to feel confident going into the exam. This schedule can be tailored to your individual needs. However, you need to make sure that it includes daily practice so that you will become accustomed to the way the test runs. With a pre-determined plan, you won’t waste time each day trying to figure out what you need to do. You will also need to ensure that you are comfortable with the time constraints of the test because that is often the hardest part for many test-takers.

TOEFL Exam Results

You will generally receive the results of your exam ten days after you have taken it. If you chose to have your scores sent to a specific institution, it will take approximately 13 days for your recipient to receive them. However, if you requested mail delivery, you must allow an additional seven to ten days.

The entire test is scored on a scale of 0-120. Each of the four sections on the iBT make up a maximum of 30 points. An important thing to understand is that earning a particular score does not mean that you passed or failed the exam. Each school or institution sets their own bar as to what scores are acceptable to them.

A good rule of thumb to take into account is that a good score on the reading and listening sections is between 22 and 30. For the speaking portion, a good score is between 26 and 30. Finally, a good score for writing is between 24 and 30. Each section is scored differently, so different sections cannot be directly compared to each other.

The test is scored using both automated methods and human scorers. This ensures that responses cannot be memorized and that fewer mistakes are made in the evaluation process. As a result, the test is nearly impossible to cheat on. Test takers need to do everything they can to rightfully obtain a good score.

The reading and listening sections are rated exclusively by computers. The speaking portion is only rated by a scorer, and the writing section is checked by both a computer and a person.
