So, which American accent is standard?
Despite there being a slight difference in American accents, it all gets down to being the same type of English. Once you have become proficient with written English, learning the standard American accent is pretty easy. There are various regional accents including;
Southern American accent
This is also called the country accent or the southern drawl. It is mainly characterized by shortened words and slow pronunciations. E.g. instead of saying let me’ the southern American accent pronounces it as lemme’. You can mostly hear this accent in movies.
New York accent
This accents contains elements that are non-rhotic. It also has rounded vowels e.g. instead of pronouncing father’ it is said as faw-thuh’. However, this accent is slowly dying out and has only been retained by a few movies and some natives.
Standard journalistic accent
It is also known as the Midwestern accents or general American accent. It is the most widely used in the entertainment industry and the journalistic scenes. The standard journalist accent is also the most widely spoken and understood.
Other accents that have found their way into America include the Canadian accent and the New England accent.
